SELEX Preparation

The SELEX simulation exercise is used by the federal government to evaluate experienced public service employees individually for promotion to the EX-01 level. It is an arduous, complex process based on advance analysis and understanding by the candidate of a sizeable fictitious organization, followed by what amounts to a day-long role-play entailing a series of simulated meetings that involve the candidate and assessors.

In practice—or in their “real” job—government people actually do most things that SELEX tests. However, unfamiliarity with the hypothetical organization, the artificiality and pressure of the exercise, and uncertainty about what is being scrutinized and scored can unsettle candidates and impede their success.

To address individual needs and improve performance significantly, our coaching provides: the dynamics and evaluation methods underlying SELEX, a proven way to breakdown voluminous corporate detail and deal with the multi-faceted simulations, tools to facilitate handling the managerial and interpersonal aspects of the exercise, and critical issues to watch for as well as pitfalls to avoid.

Personal Coaching

Our personal SELEX coaching consists of a 6-hour face-to-face or telephone consultation carried out over two sessions, and preceded by our review of your background and a discussion of your major concerns. A Study Kit tailored to help you excel accompanies the coaching.

The coaching and materials are designed and delivered by Barry Yeates, our Director. His experience working at the highest levels in Canada and abroad in government, politics, the private sector and universities, combined with his expertise in policy management and behaviourally-based evaluation, makes our service the only proven source to prepare for SELEX—the most challenging simulation used by the government.
